Respite care offers around-the-clock, short-term care for older adults or those with special needs so that caregivers can take time away—whether for work, travel or just a needed break from the demands of caregiving. Respite care provides the same services that are available to long-term residents, including 24-hour care, meals, social activities and housekeeping.

Typically respite care stays last longer than 24 hours, with the average stay around two weeks. It can also be a useful trial run before transitioning to long-term care or assisted living.
